Can A Natural Approach Help Fibromyalgia?
Currently, in the conventional medical field, there is no cure for the debilitating condition that is Fibromyalgia. But today my desire is to give you hope that there is a way out of living in chronic pain!
What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a pain disorder, "characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues", according to the Mayo Clinic. It is not a disease in itself, but rather a collection of symptoms. It's often triggered by trauma, whether emotional or physical, such as a car accident, infection or intense stress.
People with fibromyalgia often deal with excessive stress, adrenal fatigue, thyroid disorders, chronic infections, digestive issues, brain fog and other cognitive issues, anxiety and depression, headaches, TMJ, bladder issues, restless leg, chemical sensitivities and oversensitivity to stimuli such as light, sound and touch.
The Immune System’s Role in Chronic Pain
You might be wondering why we’re talking about the immune system. Our immune function plays a much bigger role in chronic pain than you might think! Infections, especially chronic ones, create extreme stress on the body, causing the immune and nervous system to become overactive and hypersensitive. Overtime, chronic infections overwork the body so much that we start underproducing important substances like thyroid hormones, stress hormones and immune cells, leaving us exhausted, moody, in pain and with inflammation running wild. Other factors such as toxins from food and the environment, poor diet, lack of exercise and medications also tax the immune system.
Where Holistic Health Comes in
Conventional medicine falls short in the way that it fails to look for the root cause of chronic pain, while patients are often prescribed a combination of medications for pain, mood, muscle tension and sleep, which carry harmful side effects. Holistic practitioners look at the body as a whole, not as individual parts, and seek to uncover the underlying causes of pain. We address how the body’s systems are interconnected and how each part functions intricately together.
Potential Underlying Factors of Fibromyalgia:
Poor diet high in sugar and processed foods
Gut issues, malabsorption and food sensitivities
Autoimmune diseases
Hidden infections, including bacteria such as Lyme Disease, viruses, parasites (yes, even in North America!) and fungal overgrowth
Mold exposure - if you’ve had leaks you have mold!
Dental work, such as wisdom teeth extraction, root canals and metal fillings
Heavy metal toxicity
Environmental toxins and low-grade chemical exposure such as through cleaning products
Hormone imbalances, adrenal and thyroid issues
Electromagnetic exposure, such as cell towers and wi-fi
Unresolved emotional issues - negative emotions are stored in our bodies and are experienced physically
As you can see, there may be many factors and underlying causes of chronic pain that need to be addressed strategically and carefully. Always work with a practitioner and consult your doctor before starting a new therapy or supplement.
Therapies That May Help Chronic Pain:
